Undergraduate Academic Affairs supports all students at Rutgers University regardless of academic home, interests, goals, class level, and ability. The various offices within UAA exist to help students persist in their studies, advance their learning, and prepare them for excellence beyond graduation.

Departments within UAA include:

  • Aresty Research Center: Our Center engages students in unique individual research projects across academic disciplines. The projects involve inquiry, design, investigation, research, scholarship, discovery, and application. Students have the opportunity to participate in a unique Summer Science Program and are eligible to receive funding for conference and presentations, domestically and abroad.
  • Byrne Seminars: Our seminars are first-year high-impact courses that are taught by faculty from all schools. First-year students experience the excitement of original research, new ideas, or theories and methodologies. Students work in small unique classroom settings that allow them to explore a discipline of interest, connect to faculty, and build networks with other students. Byrne Seminars take field trips, have guest speakers, and conduct hands-on research in faculty labs.
  • Office of Distinguished Fellowships: This office assists current students and recent graduates at all stages of the competition for major national and international awards. Our support begins with helping candidates to identify fellowships for which they qualify, continues with guiding them through the application process itself, and culminates in preparing those who more forward for interviews.
  • Pre-Law Advising: We counsel students interested in preparing for admission to law school. We use the expression "pre-law" as a way to describe all training, studies, and experience which precede formal law study. A library of law school catalogs and resource materials are available, as are statistics about applications and acceptances to law school.
  • Reserve Officers' Training Corps: The Reserve Officers' Training Corps are a group of college-based officer training programs for training commissioned officers of the United States Armed Forces. ROTC officers serve in all branches of the U.S. armed forces.
    • Rutgers Army ROTC: Army ROTC has a long-standing tradition at Rutgers of producing a diversity of leaders. The Scarlet Knight Battalion’s mission is to commission officers into the United States Army as Second Lieutenants who will serve our country in the Regular Active Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserves.
    • Navy ROTC Rutgers/Princeton: The NROTC Program was established to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, and loyalty, and with the core values of honor, courage and commitment in order to commission college graduates as naval officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the naval service, and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
    • Air Force ROTC Detachment 485: This program is built around developing leaders and commissioning officers of the United States Air Force.  It is not exclusive to Rutgers students, but incorporates students from across New Jersey's colleges and universities. 
  • RU-1st: This alliance is to enhance access and support at Rutgers University-New Brunswick for students who self-identify as first-generation through a network of high-impact programs and community relations.
  • Rutgers Learning Centers: By engaging in active and collaborative learning through the Learning Centers' (LCs) academic services, students cultivate the skills, strategies, and behaviors necessary for lasting success. The LCs partner with faculty, departments, and programs across the RU-NB community to provide in-class and co-curricular support through peer education, formal instruction, and coaching.
  • Signature Events and Sponsored Programs: We plan lectures and events including the UAA Speaker Series and provide support to academic departments or units hosting an on-campus conference or lecturer that will enhance the undergraduate experience, but are not related to a specific class.
  • Student Access & Educational Equity: Our units work collaboratively to decrease the achievement gap of historically underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income students. SAEE provides integrated experiences including summer bridge institutes, student life and academic programming, undergraduate research opportunities, and faculty networking opportunities to enrich the academic experience of students. SAEE serves students from high school through graduate and professional school.
    • Graduate Educational Opportunity Fund:  The New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund provides financial assistance and support for a graduate program. The objective of the graduate EOF program is to increase participation in graduate and professional study of New Jersey residents from backgrounds of historical poverty.
    • Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP): This program is designed to increase the quality and number of students from under-represented minority groups who complete undergraduate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
    • Ronald E. McNair Program:  This program serves low-income, first-generation college students, and/or students from a racial or ethnic group historically underrepresented in graduate education. The services provided are designed to prepare its participants with the research and scholarly activities necessary for entry into doctoral studies.
    • School of Arts and Sciences Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF): As a state funded program, SAS EOF provides financial, academic, personal and professional support services that are essential for success in college to low-income New Jersey residents who show potential and exhibit evidence of academic and/or creative promise, but who lack adequate educational or financial resources for college.
    • School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF): Focused on access, academic excellence and research, the SEBS Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) cultivates student’s capacity to make adaptive changes in their educational development and overcome historic socioeconomic factors that challenge their potential for success.
    • Student Support Services:  As a federally funded program under the U.S. Department of Education, Student Support Services (SSS) aims to increase retention and graduation rates among first-generation and/or income-eligible undergraduate students. Ultimately, SSS strives to maximize the benefits of a college education, positioning students to graduate and exit Rutgers with the skills, experience, information and connections they need to be successful.
    • Upward Bound & Upward Bound Math-Science: These pre-college programs are designed to assist and motivate students to successfully graduate from high school, prepare for college admission, and to successfully complete their baccalaureate degree.
  • Tyler Clementi Center: Through research and scholarship, best practice guidance, practical tools and interventions, we assist campus professionals in fostering institutional responsiveness and creating an affirming transition experience for all students entering higher education.
  • University Career Services: This office is committed to assisting all students - first-year to graduate students - with making connections between their academic experiences and career paths. We provide career-related counseling, resources, and programs to help individuals clarify academic and career goals, establish career plans, develop job-search skills, and make successful career transitions. We also build relationships with alumni, employers and graduate schools to open internship, job, and career opportunities while creating strategic partnerships with campus departments to assist students in developing and articulating curricular experiences that will ensure they are competitive in their future.
    • First-Year Interest Group Seminars: Our signature program offers incoming students a unique opportunity to learn about specific topical areas from successful upper-class students and discover the wide array of resources available to members of the Rutgers community.
  • University College:  University College (UC) is the hub for adult and nontraditional students, and provides a unique environment for academic success at Rutgers. UC responds to the needs of busy adults with jobs, families and other personal responsibilities that may conflict with traditional college experiences. UC provides nontraditional students access to academic resources at Rutgers to promote excellence in undergraduate education.
